Why we love TEA! Brookfarm nutritionists talk about the health benefits of pure Australian tea!
As Autumn cools down the summer heat, we start to look for something a little more seasonally appropriate, yet equally delicious and therapeutic - hot tea! Tea has been enjoyed around the world for centuries and consuming tea is linked to many health benefits. In different cultures there is ceremony and ritual involved in drinking tea and that in itself is beneficial in daily life. The action of taking the time to brew a tea, sip and enjoy the taste, does wonders for mental health. Drinking tea creates a time to stop, reflect and be present in a time where so many of us are constantly on the go.
Herbal teas (or “tisanes” for the tea purists among us) are derived from medicinal plants and offer an array of gentle therapeutic actions. Not only do they feel warming and nurturing to drink, herbal teas can calm the mind and support the body’s digestive, immune and nervous systems. For example, chamomile is commonly known to have a calming effect on the nervous system thereby promoting relaxation and aiding sleep. In addition, due to its carminative and anti-inflammatory action, sipping chamomile tea can help to ease gut discomfort and support digestion. Chamomile infused water can even be applied topically to help reduce inflammation in mild skin conditions such as dermatitis. Both black and green tea, as well as herbal teas such as peppermint, are rich in polyphenols. We love the Madura Tea Estates Green Tea & Mint or the Premium Blend! Most of us are aware of the many health benefits of these antioxidant compounds but what you may not know is that polyphenols have a beneficial impact on our gut bacteria! Research is now discovering that polyphenols act as a prebiotic type substance in our digestive system and help to increase the number of good bacteria such as lactobacillus and bifidobacteria strains. They also inhibit the growth of bad bacteria. One of the best things we can do for our overall health is improve the balance of bacteria in our digestive system and consuming some polyphenol rich tea is a simple and delicious way to do just that.
So, go on, pop the kettle on, unwrap a Brookfarm Florentina bar (dark choc is also high in polyphenols!) relax and enjoy the gentle medical benefits of a nice hot cuppa! We’ve partnered with Madura Tea Estates; their Australian farm is located right here in Northern NSW and their pure brews are a combination of passion and personality.
