Bishop takes stock of seat

9/02/17 Foreign Minister Julie Bishop breezed into Albany on Saturday night to help launch the election campaign of local Liberal candidate Greg Stocks. Four days earlier. Ms Bishop was an attendee of the G 'Day USA: Australia Week gala in Los Angeles, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Nicole Kidman. For all ihc excitement and anticipation in the room at Albany Surf Life Saving Club, the Minister put on a master class in how to relate to grassroots voters as she worked the room. The Weekender spoke briefly with Ms Bishop during her visit and she was happy to go into bat for the local candidate. "Greg is the Deputy Mayor, he's a local, he knows this community and he has lived here all his life," she said. "I believe he understands the concerns, the needs, the hopes, the dreams and the aspirations of the people of this city." Ms Bishop said she was not contemplating a loss for ihe Liberal Government. The prospect of a local Labor member in a Labor government, however, is a real possibility with voter dissatisfaction for the Liberal party and the tough economic climate. "I truly believe that Colin Barneti will lead the Liberal Party to a win at the next election and that Greg Stocks will be a very valuable member of the Barnett team," she said. When the political rhetoric was done and Ms Bishop was asked what she ate for breakfast, she was happy to confide, revealing when it came to eating breakfast, she was a bit of a muesli fiend. "Muesli and yoghurt is my standard fare. "You'd be amazed where I can find Brookfarm Muesli when I look for it." Ms Bishop left Albany for Perth after the function to return to Canberra for the resumption of Federal Parliament. She also has foreign ministers from other nations queuing up with counterparts from China. Hungary and New Zealand all due to visit in the next few weeks.
